In the Shadow of Freud’s Coach: Photographic Portraits of Psychoanalysts in Their Offices

By Mark Gerald

When training to be a psychoanalyst, a candidate will spend many years in the offices of many psychoanalysts. Dr. Gerald’s idea to photograph his colleagues was inspired by that time. During his extensive training, Dr. Gerald, now a 64-year-old analyst who practices on the Upper West Side, noticed similarities in these offices but was more struck by the differences.

To date, Dr. Gerald has photographed 55 analysts, more than half of them representing a legendary breed: the New York psychoanalyst. To view ten, visit: http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2009/03/06/nyregion/thecity/030809-psych_index.html
